CASUAL HOPELESSNESS

This dress is helping me get in the mood to do sociology homework. I could go for some meditation too… I made this dress from a vintage pattern and it’s very picky; it can only be worn when it’s 65 degrees and sunny like it is today. What a nice weekend for homework!

I had planned to wear this outfit to see Moonrise Kingdom since it came out today. When I looked up showtimes for the movie, I realized that it wasn’t even playing anywhere near me. Darn you, Western Washington! I’m wearing a vintage scarf and pin, a dress I made, a cardigan from Nordstrom, and Saltwater Sandals, and I’m carrying a vintage suitcase.

it’s not playing anywhere near me, either! so disappointed. Anyways, you look adorable.

“I always tell girls who say they want to start a band but don’t have any talent, well, neither do I. I mean, I can carry a tune, but anyone who picks up a bass can figure it out. You don’t have to have magic unicorn powers. You work at it, and you get better. It’s like anything: You sit there and do it every day, and eventually you get good at it.”

- Kathleen Hanna

I feel sorry for kids these days. They get so much homework. Remember the days when we put a belt around our two books and carried them home? Now they’re dragging a suitcase. They have school all day, then homework from six until eleven. There’s no time left to be creative. The hardest part for me is when my thirteen-year-old is complaining about the workload. I agree with him. I’m supposed to be responsible and support the teacher. But it’s like, ‘You’re right, son. This is bullshit.’

I hope everyone is having a somewhat non-hellish end-of-the-year cramtime.

Trailer for Mindy Kaling’s new show.

so excited! I love mindy kaling!!

I made a collage from a 70’s NatGeo for my mom’s Mother’s Day card.
Looking forward to maybe doing more collaging in the future, because it’s really fun!
I used about a billion stickers on the back, which was also fun.

my attempt at a beehive with short hair. it deflated a bit since this morning. just don’t look at the back!

i finally kept a journal this year for the WHOLE YEAR. not like, day-to-day anne frank stuff, but weekly writing and collaging or whatever.  anyone else keep a journal?  tips?  i feel like i finally was able to keep it going (after many years of failed attempts) because i stopped thinking of my journal as this HOLY THING and just started jotting down meaningless stuff without thinking about what The Future Me would think when I read it.

i’ve learned with both journaling and comics drawing that you can’t be too much of a perfectionist about it or think of it as this special thing you need to set aside time for because then you will just NEVER DO ANYTHING EVER.

i use these books my sister makes out of poor art student supplies. she should do a DIY on it for rookie, yeah?

I used to be a pretty obsessive journaler, but got out of the habit so starting in tomorrow I’m going to try this new thing a friend of mine told me about: the 5 year journal. Basically you buy two of those black and white composition books (I loooove those things) and you put a date in (January 1, January 2, etc) one to each page on the upper outside corner. Then on the top line all the way to the left write the first year. Go 6 lines down and write the second year, and so on. Your first comp book will be January through June and your second comp book will be July through December. My friend says there will be extra pages at the end and she uses those for overflow on days she wants to write more than six lines. Obvs you don’t have to do it every day, but all you have is six lines to fill in or draw on or paste a concert ticket into or whatever. She says it’s super cool as you get to year two, year three, etc to see where you were/what you were thinking about on that day a year ago. It sounded like a cool journal/time capsule combo to me, so I’m definitely trying it starting tomorrow!

Damn Stephanie that is such a good idea! I’ve been writing a diary since I was 13 and managed to keep it pretty consistent and also managed to get one of my holiday friends to start one too - without realising! As she said, it’s just a good thing to write stuff down. I love looking back at exactly how I felt and what I did on a particular day, so much so you can get lost in your own life so far. I have my writing diary, then a lyric/poem moleskine and then a notebook for doodles and crazy stuff.

Go big with your bedroom rainbow underwear modern dance routine or go home, I say. Bow Ribbons is doing it to it. Really love her video and her throwback Cat Power voice.
